Streaming of Courses and Lectures
The E-Learning Unit Landau offers you support in the streaming of courses and lectures. For this purpose, we provide you with technical equipment via our equipment lending service and are happy to advise you on the implementation. The video platform Panopto or the BigBlueButton provided by the RPTU in Landau are suitable as privacy-compliant platforms. Both integrate well with OpenOLAT, but can also be used without this integration.
- Panopto is well suited for events with large numbers of participants. However, the transmission via Panopto occurs with a latency of about 45 seconds, so that queries can only be made afterwards via a comment function.
- BigBluebutton is suitable for smaller events with a maximum of 300 participants. Since BBB is a video conferencing tool, direct interaction with the participants is possible. Instructions for BBB can be found here [german].
At the turn of the year 2022, the update to BigBlueButton 2.4 was implemented. This provides users* with the following improvements:- Virtual webcam backgrounds
- significantly extended capacities
- Layout manager allows layout preferences for participant views
- Ability to perfom anonymous surveys
- Group rooms: Assign names and extending of groups when already running
- Survey results and videos are displayed in recordings
- Changes in external video sharing
- Reduced mirror effect in screen sharing
- Zoom: The RPTU in Landau offers a central Zoom account. For technical questions about Zoom or questions regarding a Zoom license, please visit the university's central help page. When planning your courses, please take into account the separation of the university from the Koblenz campus at the turn of the year and thus any pending changes to such licenses. If you have any didactic questions regarding the use of Zoom in teaching, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Video conferences
For video conferencing, we recommend renting our Logitech Group video conferencing system. The system consists of a camera that can be panned and zoomed by remote control and mounted on a tripod if required, three microphones that can be distributed around the room, and a loudspeaker. It is compatible with all common video conferencing systems such as BigBlueButton or Zoom.
Of course, you can also conduct video conferences from your computer without the video conferencing system. However, for this you will need a suitable platform as well as possibly additional devices such as an external webcam or a microphone or headset. The BigBlueButton provided by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate is suitable as a video conferencing platform. Using this tool, you can hold meetings easily and in compliance with data protection regulations. BigBlueButton also integrates seamlessly with OpenOLAT. You can find a tutorial on BBB here [german].
